James, 18, paced Lovington High to the state Class AAA track and field title as he set state high school records in the 100 meters (10.6), 200 (21.2) and 400 (49.0). He also ran a leg on the record-setting 4 X 400 relay team (3:24.1).

PENNY HARRINGTON
CROSSVILLE, ILL.
Penny, a junior first baseman for the Crossville High softball team, paced the Tigers to a 36-3 win over Carmi High by hitting two grand slams in an inning for the second time in her career. She also had 11 RBIs during the game.

ALEC TREGONE
MARIETTA, GA.
Tregone, a 71-year-old retired Veteran's Administration supervisor who took up golf four years ago, had two holes in one during a round at Marietta's Par 56 course. He used a seven-wood to ace the 135-yard 5th and the 126-yard 8th holes.

DAVID WHEATON
MINNETONKA, MINN.
David, a ninth-grader at Minnetonka High, is believed to be the first freshman ever to win the state high school singles tennis title. He beat Tom Olmscheid, a senior from Coon Rapids High, 6-3, 6-0 to finish the season unbeaten in 26 matches.

TUCSON
Paula, who'll enter USC this fall, averaged 28.8 points and 6.1 rebounds a game in leading the Santa Rita High girls' basketball team to a 28-0 record and the Class AAA state title. She outscored the opposing team nine times.

SALT LAKE CITY
Sayes, a 39-year-old mathematics teacher, defeated 22-year-old squash pro Dave Richards, the No. 1 seed, 15-11, 13-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-14 to win his fifth consecutive Utah State Open Squash championship in Salt Lake City.
