Martig, Santa Clara '84, batted .401 and had a school-record 89 hits in 58 games this year while playing third base for the Broncos. As strong safety on the football team, he had 172 tackles and eight interceptions the past two seasons.
Cheri, 15, pitched Vanderbilt Catholic High to a fifth straight state high school softball crown, tying the national record for winning such titles. She pitched all three state tournament wins and was 18-0 on the year with a 1.87 ERA.
DEREK MICHAEL RODRIGUEZ
Derek, 7, did 81 sit-ups in one minute and 147 pushups in two minutes to break two Dade Christian School age-group physical-fitness records. He was also the top defender on his league-champion soccer team.
Scott, who'll be a freshman at Tufts this fall, won the single-handed division of the Interscholastic National Sailing Championship at Annapolis, Md. He also won the 1983 Smythe Trophy for being the top U.S. junior single-handed sailor.
Nina, a sophomore at Kaiser High, and Karen, a junior at Punahou School, combined for seven firsts at the state high school track and field championships. Nina won the 1,600 meters (5:04.6), set a state girls' high school record in the 800 (2:13.5) and was victorious in the 3,200 (11.25.8). Karen won the high jump (5'3") and long jump (17'8¼"), which were contested simultaneously; ran the 400 in 57.7, one second off the state girls' high school mark; and anchored the winning 4 X 400 relay.
