Freeman was 37-1 his senior year, wrestling in the 155-pound division for St. Stephen's School in Alexandria. He won the state prep school championship three consecutive years and holds the Virginia win record, public and private (129-16).

Erika, 14, set an age-group record of 4:45.58 while winning the women's 400 individual medley at the U.S. outdoor nationals in Fort Lauderdale. She clipped 3.35 seconds off Tracy Caulkins' age-group mark, set in 1977.

JIM SUTTON
WHITFIELD, PA.
Sutton, 53, set a national Masters mile record of 4:38.1 for his age, in Philadelphia, lowering the old mark by more than 10 seconds. Sutton started running track events only three years ago and has never lost in the mile, 1,500 or 800 meters.

MARTIN CLARK
ENGLEWOOD, COLO.
Martin, 12, led his Little League team, the Yankees, to the conference, state and district titles, hitting .667 with 15 homers and 68 RBIs in 32 games; as a pitcher, he amassed a 12-0 record with 124 strikeouts in 69 innings.

Melissa, 15, a sophomore at Chadwick School, won the National 18 Hardcourts in Burlingame, Calif. by beating Stephanie London 7-5, 6-0. She was also undefeated as No. 1 player on her school's varsity. Her sister, Cinda, 13, an eighth-grader at Chadwick, won the girls' 14 division of the hardcourts by beating Noelle Porter 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in San Rafael, Calif. Last year Melissa was ranked No. 2 nationally in the girls' 16 singles, Cinda third in the girls' 12s.
