Cathy, 16, a junior at Newport Harbor High School who plays to a two handicap, defeated Michiko Hattori of Japan 1-up in the 18-hole final to win the U.S. Girls' Junior Golf Championship at Mill Creek (Wash.) Country Club.
Chandler, 50, a head custodian and a softball player for 31 years, was named MVP of the Oregon men's Class A fast-pitch tournament. He finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, 45 strikeouts in 26 innings and a 2.15 ERA.
Holly, 15, playing in her first major tournament, reached the final of the North American Tennis Open in Livingston, N.J. with straight-set victories over world-ranked Leigh Thompson and Virginia Ruzici before losing to Steffi Graf.
Mike, 13, son of former Met Craig Anderson, led his Little League team to a 15-0 record by hitting .538 with seven homers, including two grand slams. As a pitcher, he allowed only five earned runs in 47 innings and threw three no-hitters.
Kim, a junior at Piano Senior High, won the 800-meter run in the 15-16 age group at the TAC National Meet in Provo, Utah, in 2:12.59. A week later she won the same event at the National Junior Olympics in Baton Rouge, in 2:12.36.
DeVarona, 34, a fire fighter, drove a 32-foot Scorpion to set a Miami-to-New York outboard record. DeVarona and his crew of three covered the 1,257 statute miles in 40 hours, three minutes, surpassing the old mark by 18 hours, 10 minutes.
