Joseph, a senior at Bay City High, won three gold medals at the Junior Pan Am Championships in Nassau, Bahamas, the first runner ever to do so. He won the 100 meters (10.43), the 200 (20.94) and anchored the victorious 4 X 100 relay.

Tracy, 14, a member of the Allentown Parkettes gymnastics club, won her second consecutive 14-and-under all-around title at the National Junior Elite championships in Tucson, earning a berth on the U.S. Junior Elite team.

Sotelo, 19, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player as his team, the Lake Worth Rangers, won the National Senior (18-21) baseball championship in Schenectady. A shortstop, he had two doubles and four singles in 13 at bats.

Heim, a 26-year-old special education teacher, set a record for swimming the Bay between Oakland and San Francisco, covering the four miles in one hour, 25 minutes, 16 seconds. She broke the 1982 record of Deborah Howard by 13:49.

Tim, a 27-year-old carpenter, and his wife, Mary Ellen, 26, took line and handicap honors in winning the Jack 'n' Jill trans-Pacific yacht race from Port Angeles, Wash, to Diamond Head on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Racing in their 30-foot catboat Coronet, they completed the 2,349-nautical-mile crossing in 19 days, 15 hours, 51 minutes and 43 seconds, almost a full day faster than the race record that was set in 1982 by Ellis Giddens and Kay Walsh in an Ericson-37.
