Amy, 15, was the state girls' high school diving champion in both Minnesota and Kansas, a result of her family's move in midyear. In winning the Kansas title, she set a state record of 444.55 points, 18 better than Nancy Fenn's 1975 mark.

GALEN BICKEL
ALTOONA, PA.
Bickel, 31, a school teacher, sank 32 second-half baskets and scored a total of 100 points as his team, Benzel's, beat Francesco's 124-74 in an Altoona summer basketball league game. He broke Curtis Miller's league record of 58 points.

CHARLOTTE SMITH
DEWITT, ARK.
Smith, 18, a freshman at the University of Mississippi, was named Arkansas Female Athlete of the Year for her exploits at DeWitt High, where she was all-state in basketball and state champion in the discus, high jump and pentathlon.

ODEM, TEXAS
David, 17, an all-tournament third baseman and pitcher, led Odem High to the Class 3A title in the six-game state championship with five complete-game wins. In the final game he went 4 for 5 and won his sixth victory in relief.

LAUREL, MD.
Wirt, 24, a payroll clerk, set a women's record for the highest average in duckpin-bowling league play with her 146.18 for a 105-game schedule. The previous record of 145 for 81 games was established by Mikki Irish of Manchester, Conn.

JOSH CASSELLS
LONGMONT, COLO.
Josh, 8, swept all four of his events—the 25-yard breast, 50 free, 100 free and 100 IM—in the 8-and-unders at the Northern Colorado District Swimming Championships. He later won four more medals at the state championships.
