Triebold, 31, and Holcomb, 28, were the top nonaffiliated finishers in the 13th American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race, which took place on Feb. 23, between Hayward and Cable, Wis. Triebold, a pipe fitter, placed 32nd overall and sixth in the men's 30-34 class, completing the 34-mile course in 2:34:07.2. Holcomb, a potter, was fifth among the women and was third in the women's 25-29 class with a time of 2:58:34.6. A total of 5,500 skiers took part in the race.

Maria, 18, a 5'8" guard for Mount Carmel Area High, had 32 points in a 55-54 win over Pottsville Area High to bring her career total to 3,623 and surpass Tom McMillen (3,608) as Pennsylvania's most prolific basketball high school scorer ever.

Murat, 15, won the under-16 men's foil and placed 11th in the under-20 category in the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Cleveland. He was unbeaten in 20 U-16 bouts and beat Ben Atkins of New York City 10-7 in the final.

Andrea, a sophomore at Walton High, ran 440 yards in 53.91 seconds in a heat and did 53.45 in the final of the U.S. indoor championships in New York City. Each performance was a girls' national high school indoor record; the old mark of 54.32 was set by Maxine Underwood of Brookline, Mass. in 1982. Paul, a senior at Prospect Heights High, set a national indoor scholastic record of 1:20.5 for the 600 meters at the Public Schools Athletic League city indoor championships in Manhattan.
