Lasserud, 56, a house painter, won bronze medals in the 15-, 30-and 50-km cross-country ski races (age 55 to 59) at the World Masters Championships in Hirschau, West Germany, and a silver as anchor of the U.S. 3 X 10-km relay team.

Margaret, 18, ran the 1,000 meters in 2:47.44 at the U.S. Olympic Invitational meet in East Rutherford, N.J., breaking by 2.44 seconds Renee Harbaugh's year-old girls' national indoor high school record. At the same meet Stephanie, 16, ran the 60 yards in 6.94 to equal the fastest girls' scholastic time of the year. She has also done 24.34 for 220 yards, 34.94 for 300 yards (making her the third-best high school sprinter ever in that event) and 54.5 for a leg on her 4 X 400-meter relay team.

Powell, 35, the superintendent at Myers Park C.C., won the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America championship at Hilton Head Island, S.C. over a field of 303 opponents. He shot 151 for 36 holes, nine over par.

Steve, a 6'2" senior guard for Calvary Baptist, sank 398 free throws this season to surpass the high school record of 357 set by Ervin Stepp of Phelps, Ky. in 1980. Steve was the top scholastic scorer in the U.S., averaging 49.8 points a game.

Candy, a 5'9" senior, led UNCC with a 19.8 points-per-game average. In her second game after having been sidelined for 13 days with a dislocated shoulder, Candy scored a career-high 37 points as the 49ers stopped Western Carolina 71-56.
