Janne, 17, of Lyons Township High, became the first gymnast in Illinois to win three consecutive all-around state titles. She averaged 9.425 in four events (floor exercise, vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam), with a 9.55 for the beam.

MIKE MESSERE
SYRACUSE, N.Y.
Messere, 41, has coached the West Genesee High lacrosse team to a 190-9 record, with nine league and seven regional titles, since 1976. With 91 consecutive wins from 1981 to '84, his Wildcats tied the U.S. record set by Sewanhaka High in 1957.

Karen, 9, bowled one spare and seven strikes (and one gutter ball) en route to a 225 game at DeLuxe Lanes in North Tonawanda; it is the nation's highest single-game score in the girls' bantam (8 and under) division. Her average is 76 a game.

Coan, 21, exceeded three world records in the 198-pound class at the Hawaii International Powerlifting Championships. His 848-pound squat, 854-pound deadlift and 2,204-pound total surpassed the world marks by 22, 33 and 138 pounds.

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND
McMiken, a junior at Oklahoma State, set a women's world indoor record of 14:53.80 in the three-mile run at the Big Eight championships, cutting 4½ seconds from the 1981 mark of the University of Virginia's Margaret Groos.

SPOKANE
Vela, 23, won the 500-yard freestyle (4:31.26), 100 backstroke (51.55) and 200 backstroke (1:51.32) and competed on three winning Central Washington relay teams at the NAIA nationals. He was named NAIA swimmer of the year.
