Eva, 61, and husband Howard, 66, each teamed with a partner to win doubles championships at the U.S. International Professional Shuffleboard championships in Hollywood, Fla. Eva and Anna Carbetta beat Dorothy Kniep and Blanche Girard for their third consecutive women's title. Howard and Dewey Born overcame an earlier defeat in the double-elimination tournament, winning two out of three games to beat Howard Skinner and Oscar Kohlman for the men's title.

Arra, 40, used a 13-foot rod with a 5.3-oz. sinker for a 737'11" cast to win the Cape Cod Regional Casting tournament in Falmouth, Mass. The three-time U.S. long-distance surfcasting champion is the first American to cast over 700 feet.

Pierre, a Hazlewood High junior, broke three of his own class 1A-2A state records at the state track and field meet in Troy. The events were the 110-meter high hurdles (14.09), 300 intermediate hurdles (37.72) and 100-meter dash (10.78).

Avril, a senior forward at New Lima High, which had a 30-0 record, averaged 39.9 points per game as the Falconettes won their second consecutive state basketball championship. She hit 76.5% of her shots this season and had 3,639 career points in 120 games. Cari, a senior guard at Sehome High, led her state in scoring with a 26.8-points-per-game average. Cari averaged 5.7 assists, a Northwest AA league record, and 6.2 steals per game as the Mariners finished with a 24-4 record.
