P.J., 11, a shortstop for the Little League Cardinals, caught a bases-loaded line drive, doubled one runner off second and tagged another out for an unassisted triple play to end the game in an 8-6 win which cost the Giants the league title.

Caroline, 18, a Regis High grad, won the state singles tennis championship for the third time in four years, beating teammate Laurie Stephan 6-1, 6-3 for the title. She ended with a career record of 71-3 and will attend Kentucky in the fall.

Bobby, a junior-to-be at Taft High, led the Tigers to their second straight AA-A state golf title by shooting a tournament-low 145 for 36 holes. Over the past two years Taft has had a 19-1 dual meet mark and has won 16 straight tournaments.

Sonya, 15, a member of the Long Island Alliance Club, broke by four inches the state high school long-jump record, established in 1983 by Kim McDole, by jumping 20'1½" at the National TAC Youth Championships in Uniondale.

Jackel, 67, a retired insurance salesman, won the veterans super singles division of the USHA national four-wall handball championships in Tucson. He beat Irving Simon of Beverly Hills, Calif. 21-5, 17-21, 11-5 for the title.

L√§ra, 15, won two Region Seven and Eight synchronized swimming titles at the AAU Junior Olympics in Clayton, Mo. She won the solo division in her age group for the fourth time and the trio division with Jean Pane and Rachel Slotsve.
