Johnson, a 27-year-old geologist, swam the English Channel on Aug. 13 from Cap Gris-Nez, France to a point half a mile north of St. Margaret's Bay, England in eight hours and 20 minutes, breaking Lyndon Dunsbee's 1984 record by 14 minutes. On Aug. 29, on another body of water, Petranech, 50, a Red Cross disaster worker, became the oldest person to cover the 20.5-mile distance from Catalina Island to Point Vicente in Palos Verdes, Calif. His time was 13 hours, 28 minutes and 48 seconds.

Deresa, 11, set a U.S. record for 11-and 12-year-olds in the 3,000 meters at the National TAC Youth Championships, lowering Reina Felix's one-year-old mark by 39.26 seconds to 10:13.91. She also placed second in the 1,500.

Ilya, a 13-year-old with a master rating, became the first American to win the world under-14 chess championship, competing against 37 players from 26 countries in Lomas de Zamora, Argentina. He is an eighth-grader at Yeshiva Academy.

Josh, a 12-year-old pitcher, led the Ivy Lumber Co. to a 14-1 season record and the Dixie Youth baseball championship. In 33 innings he gave up only 11 base hits, pitched a no-hitter and struck out 80 batters on his way to a 7-0 record.

Choate, 75, won her 22nd Apawamis Club women's golf championship on the 50th anniversary of her first title. A 10 handicap-per and former U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Champion, she defeated Kathryn Ekirch 2 and 1 in the final match.
