Oehmig, a 69-year-old bank vice-president, beat Ed Hopkins of Whitney, Texas in sudden death on the 20th hole at the Wild Dunes Resort in Charleston, S.C. to become the first three-time winner of the U.S. Senior Amateur golf title.

Tami, 16, a junior at Armstrong High, defeated Beth Boardman of Appleton East 6-0, 6-0 for her third consecutive state high school girls tennis singles championship. She has won 79 straight matches in three years of competition.

Hyder, 50, coached Valdosta High to a 21-0 victory over Bainbridge, the 600th football win in the school's history. Valdosta is 8-1 this season. Massillon (Ohio) High, the only other school to reach the 600-victory mark, has 605 wins.

Friedl, 22, an assistant store manager, defeated Yan Li of Taiwan for the gold medal in the lightweight sparring category at the inaugural women's World Cup Karate championships, in Taiwan. In August she won a gold at the AAU nationals.

Larry, 15, a pitcher for New Bloomfield's Babe Ruth League team, was involved in all 21 putouts in a 5-1 win over Blain. He had 14 strikeouts, five assists on grounders to the mound, caught a popup and threw to first for a double play.
