Debbie, 13, a freshman at North Brunswick High, defeated senior Joli Harvanik of Watchung Hills High 1-6, 6-4,6-2 in the final to win the girls' state high school singles tennis championship; she is the youngest player ever to win the title. Debbie ended her season at 24-1. Joe, a sophomore at Omaha Central High, won his second boys' state high school singles title in a row by beating Spencer Owen of Omaha Burke High 7-6, 6-3 in the final. His season record was 16-2.

WICHITA, KANS.
Cathy, a senior at Wichita's Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High, won her third consecutive girls' state high school class 5A-6A golf championship. She fired a one-over-par 72 for 18 holes in Overland Park to defeat three other players by five strokes.

WASILLA, ALASKA
Gordy, a Wasilla High senior, won his second consecutive state high school cross-country championship, defeating runner-up Mike Kramer of Lathrop High by six seconds. Gordy covered the 5-km course in Anchorage in 15:57.

SHELLEY TAYLOR
PERTH, AUSTRALIA
Taylor, a senior at Arkansas who was named the long-distance swimmer of the year by U.S. Swimming, swam around Manhattan in 6 hours, 12 minutes and 29 seconds, breaking by 29 minutes, 6 seconds the record set in 1983 by Drury Gallagher.

GREG FREY
CINCINNATI
Greg, a senior quarterback at St. Xavier High, completed 28 of 55 passes for a state-record 487 yards in a 56-42 loss to Moeller High. The passing-yardage total was unofficially the ninth-highest ever at a U.S. high school.
