BETWEEN THE LINES

THE SPLIT-FINGERED TYPIST
Giants manager Roger Craig now has a daily column in the San
Francisco Chronicle, called ''Inside the Giants.'' ''Does this mean
you have to leave the clubhouse half an hour before the game?''
pitcher Mark Davis asked Craig, referring to the rule that applies to
members of the media.
'WHAT'S J.R. REALLY LIKE?'
When he boarded his flight to Houston for the All-Star Game,
George Brett noticed that the man sitting beside him was wearing a
ROYALS WORLD CHAMPIONS hat. ''I thought, Oh, no, I've got some guy
who'll bust my chops the entire flight, wanting to know why the
Royals aren't winning.'' Brett pulled a magazine close to his face
but then caught a glimpse of his neighbor. It was actor Patrick Duffy
of television's Dallas. ''I told him, 'Dallas is my favorite show,'
'' said Brett, ''and I proceeded to bust his chops about it all the
way to Houston.''
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
-- ''The best thing about him, he's 22, and he's built like a
Greek goddess.'' | -- Detroit manager Sparky Anderson on Oakland's
Jose Canseco.
TURN, TURN, TURN
At the All-Star break last year the Cards' Tommy Herr was hitting
.334 with 68 RBIs; this year he's .218 with 23 RBIs. Last year Willie
McGee was batting .340 with 36 stolen bases at the break; this year
he's .241 with 12 steals.
A TIME TO LAUGH,
A TIME TO CRY
When Whitey Herzog went out to give home plate umpire Bruce
Froemming some lineup changes in the sixth inning of the All-Star
Game, with the American League leading 2-0, Froemming said, ''You've
put a hex on this team, too.''
AND OUT OF THE PHONE
BOOTH POPPED . . .
Giants rookie outfielder Randy Kutcher had 21 homers in his first
six professional seasons, including a season high of 7 in 1981. This
year he hit 11 at Phoenix, and then belted 7 in his first 24 games
with San Francisco.
WAS THAT ''WILLYWORLD''?
A producer for ABC's Good Morning, America called Wally Joyner to
ask if he would appear on the show the day of the All-Star Game.
''We've got Darryl Raspberry,'' she said, trying to encourage him.
Joyner appeared on NBC's Today show.
SEATTLE PILOT
When the Mariners released Barry Bonnell, whose hobby is flying,
the veteran outfielder offered to continue to earn the remainder of
his salary by flying owner George Argyros's private jet. Argyros, who
owns Air Cal, in turn offered to send Bonnell to his pilots' training
school.
MIKE FISCHLIN, ALL-STAR
The Yankees' Don Mattingly took teammate Mike Fischlin's bat to
the All-Star Game and used it. ''I tried to hold the label up so his
family and friends would see 'Mike Fischlin' was in the game,'' said
Mattingly.
MISCELLANEOUS

-- When Orioles catcher Al Pardo steps to the plate in Chicago's
Comiskey Park, organist Nancy Faust plays the theme from Jeopardy, in
homage to announcer Don Pardo.
-- For those who love Comiskey: A plane flew over the Astrodome
prior to the All-Star Game dragging a sign that read, REINHORN: SELL
OUR WHITE SOX.
-- The White Sox ERA is 5.08 with Carlton Fisk in leftfield, 3.85
with Fisk catching.

first 87 games.
-- The gift for the American League All-Stars was a pair of Justin
cowboy boots. Nice, but it reminded All-Star Wade Boggs that he had
injured a rib pulling off his boots in Toronto last month.
