GOLF AT ITS BEST
Sir:
Frank Deford and Bernie Fuchs carried us back to the links at
Turnberry with + their story on the 1977 British Open (The Best
Against The Best, July 14). The duel between Nicklaus and Watson was
brought to life and showed us what sport and sportsmanship should be.
Thank you for such a brilliantly crafted piece of journalism.

Sir:
Before reading Deford's article on the British Open, I vaguely
remembered that July afternoon back in 1977. Now I recall it as if it
were last year's Open. My compliments to you for helping people
realize that pros like Watson and Nicklaus make golf such a great
sport.

Sir:
I watched that great match on television, but the Deford touch --
Alfie Fyles, the coin in the divot anecdote, the hotel dining room
that evening, Tom's room that night and the Scottish piper --
literally brought a tear to this golf fan's eye. The piece ought to
be required reading for all athletes of all ages. Call it
Sportsmanship 101.
