19TH HOLE THE READERS TAKE OVER

ALL THE BEST
Sir:
I am a writer and a golfer. I've never before written to a
magazine in regard to the quality of its writing, but I feel
compelled to comment on Frank Deford's article The Best Against The
Best (July 14) concerning Tom Watson's duel with Jack Nicklaus in the
1977 British Open. It was, to use a Nicklaus phrase, ''well played.''

Sir:
Having just returned from Turnberry, I read with a lump in my
throat and a tear in my eye the story by Frank Deford. Greatest golf
match in history? Yes! Greatest article about the greatest golf match
in history? Yes! Yes!
