19TH HOLE THE READERS TAKE OVER
KITTY GODFREE
Sir:
In his Wimbledon account (Summer Reruns, July 14) Frank Deford
stated that two-time champion Kitty McKane Godfree won in 1924
because she did not face Suzanne Lenglen. True, Lenglen was forced
by illness to default their semifinal match, but Deford did not
mention that Godfree beat Helen Wills in the final. That was Wills's
only defeat at Wimbledon. In fact, Godfree is the only player to win
a Wimbledon in which both Lenglen and Wills competed.
