19TH HOLE THE READERS TAKE OVER ANOTHER AMERICAN TRIUMPH

Thank you for Curry Kirkpatrick's excellent article on the 1986
World Basketball Championships (Monsters Of The Mundobasket, July
28).
I especially enjoyed watching Tyrone (Muggsy) Bogues continually
harass his foreign counterparts in Madrid. As a Wake Forest student,
I have watched in awe as the ''Human Assist'' has had to carry a
struggling Demon Deacon team through a deadly ACC schedule. It will
be interesting to see if he can make it in the NBA after his senior
season. If not, the Harlem Globetrotters may beckon, or perhaps he
will return to Europe as la Chispa Negra (the black spark).
To the man whom Al McGuire once called the ''PT Boat,'' I say good
luck!

Our team's victory in Spain was one of the great amateur sporting
performances in U.S. history. Lute Olson is to be congratulated for
his excellent coaching and for the thrilling win over the Soviets.
Would you please give us one last look at the long and short of the
championships -- the Soviets' 7 ft. 2 in. Arvidas Sabonis and our 5
ft. 3 in. Muggsy Bogues?
