19TH HOLE THE READERS TAKE OVER BOYD'S BLOWUPS
Sir:
Thanks for Peter Gammons's air-clearing story on Red Sox pitcher
Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd (One Woe After Another, Aug. 4). We folks out
West get only the headlines, not the stories behind them. I, for one,
can see where the Can is coming from. He's broke, his All-Star stats
don't get him to the All-Star Game, and when he finally loses his
cool, he's accused, wrongly as it turns out, of being on drugs! After
all, a man can only take so much. It's gratifying to know that Can
the superstar is also just Can the man. Give the man the ball, Red
Sox!

Sir:
As far as I'm concerned, Boyd needs major league baseball but
major league baseball does not need him. He has proved time and time
again that he is simply too immature to play pro baseball. If he
wants to be recognized as a professional, he should conduct himself
as one, win or lose. I offer two words of advice to him: Grow up.
