Steve Carlton retired at 41 last week -- for good, he said,
although there were indications he might change his mind and sign
with the White Sox. He had an un-Leftylike record of 5-11 and a 5.89
ERA. But those numbers are hardly surprising. Most previous retired
300-game winners haven't fared too well in their farewell seasons:
