Mattila, a 76-year-old retired physical education teacher, established national short-course swimming records (75-79 age group) in six events—the 100-, 200-and 400-yard IMs and the 50-, 100- and 200-yard butterflies—at a meet in Fort Pierce, Fla.

NEWPORT, DEL.
Brown, 25, an auto parts salesman, won the overall title at the state skeet shooting championships in Newark, Del., with first-place finishes in the .410-and 12-gauge events and seconds in the 20 and 28 gauges. Brown hit 395 of 400 targets.

LORIE ELLIOTT
MT. CLEMENS, MICH.
Lorie, 15, pitched all 20 games for the L'Anse Creuse North summer softball team on the way to an 18-2 record and the Macomb County 15-and-under championship. She had 202 strikeouts in 122 innings and led the team with 40 RBIs and 49 runs.

BRIAN MONTGOMERY
BRISTOW, OKLA.
Brian, 17, shot a five-over-par 293 to win the PGA junior title in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., becoming the first player to win both major U.S. junior boys' championships in the same year. In July, Brian won the USGA junior amateur title.

BUENA PARK, CALIF.
Reetz, 17, placed first among the women and second overall al the premier FINA Long Distance Swimming Cup, at Lake Windermere, England. She finished the 25-km race, swimming in water temperatures as low as 58°, in 6:42:00.

RYAN MAGUIRE
TUCKER, GA.
Ryan, 11, who was the shortstop for the Tucker All-Stars, hit five straight doubles in two games at the Dixie Youth Baseball slate tournament held in Ringgold. The All-Stars won both games, but finished runner-up to South Gwinnett.
