ANIMALS IN THE CROWD

WINNIE
WINNETKA, ILL.
Winnie, a six-year-old golden retriever and aspiring ball girl, loves tennis balls and can hold three of them in her mouth at the same time. She can also lie on her back and roll two balls down her front legs and into her mouth.

KAI
SAN DIEGO
Kai, a 10-year-old Pacific bottlenose dolphin at Sea World, can jump higher than any dolphin in the 22-year history of the aquarium. Kai's jumps have exceeded 20 feet, several feet higher than any of his marine show predecessors.

TOM TURTLE
BROOKLYN PARK, MD.
Tom, a western box turtle who was born in Florida, defeated more than 75 competitors to take first place in the 45th annual Chesapeake Turtle Derby in Baltimore. Tom won his heat, then sped to the finish line first in the nine-turtle final.

SADIE
INDIANAPOLIS

LUCY
BROOKFIELD, ILL.

Sadie, a 175-pound miniature pig, uses her snout to roll a basketball up a ramp and through a rim attached to a backboard. Promoted as the Hoosier Hotshot, she began shooting hoops in June. Lucy, a 12-year-old mule, plays basketball with a regulation-size ball (slightly deflated), which she picks up in her mouth and drops into a barrel. Her participation in races and parades has helped earn her a spot in the American Donkey and Mule Society's Versatility Hall of Fame, in Denton, Texas.

PEPPY
CHICAGO
Peppy, a two-toed sloth at the Lincoln Park Zoo, has covered less ground this year than any other animal in the memory of zoo officials. Zoo director Dr. Lester Fisher points out that Peppy has accomplished this feat "without coaching."
