Gilcrest, 51, coached the College of the Sequoias women's basketball team to its sixth straight Central Valley Conference championship and the state community college title. The Lady Giants finished the season with a 35-0 record.

Dahlgren, a University of Nebraska senior, won the Broderick Award as the nation's top women's college volleyball player. She led her team to its 11th straight Big Eight title and to a second-place finish in the NCAA tournament.

Orlando, a Western Hills High junior, set Ohio scholastic weightlifting records in the 165-pound class in the squat (525 pounds) and in total weight (1,355 pounds), and tied the bench press mark (330 pounds) at the state meet in Dayton.

Lauren, an eighth-grader at Supai Middle School, threw her sixth shutout of the season, striking out 10 batters, to lead the unbeaten Lady Devils to a 15-0 victory over Cocopah and to the Scottsdale district fast-pitch softball championship.

Jay, a 6'5" swing forward, and Lyndon, a 6'3" point guard, both seniors at Marion High, were named corecipients of the 1987 Mr. Basketball award as the state's top high school players. Jay averaged 21.4 points a game this season and has amassed 1,860 career points, while Lyndon averaged 19.9 and totaled 1,711 in his career. They led the Giants to an 85-4 three-year record and the last three state championships. Both players plan to attend Indiana University in the fall.
