A New Year And New Champions

The nation's No. 1 team, Miami, swaggered into its Fiesta Bowl showdown with No. 2 Penn State on Jan. 2 and came away a 14-10 loser.

The Nittany Lions completed a 12-0 season and won the mythical national title by intercepting five of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Vinny Testaverde's passes, the final one on their own goal line with nine seconds left. At Super Bowl XXI in Pasadena, the Giants beat the Broncos 39-20 to end a 28-year title drought.

Quarterback Phil Simms completed 22 of 25 passes and led New York to four second-half touchdowns.



Coach Joe Paterno was riding high after Penn State beat Miami for the national title.



Phil McConkey's TD catch helped seal the Giants' Super Bowl win over the Broncos.
