Best, 23, rode Gem Twist to victory at the American Grandprix Association's national show-jumping championship, in Tampa, to become the first rider to be named the AGA Rookie of the Year and win the national title in the same year.

Cindy, a 6'2" senior center on the Osceola High girls' basketball team, scored a state girls' high school record of 65 points, in an 84-66 win over Benedict High. She broke the old mark, which was set in 1976, by eight points.

Bridget, a second-grader at St. Antoninus grade school, scored 70 goals to lead the Rajin Cajuns to a 20-0 record and the Ohio state soccer title for girls six and seven years old. St. Antoninus scored 165 goals while giving up only one.

MATT SUGGS
CLARION, PA.
Suggs, a sophomore at the University of South Florida, was second to Kiril Ivanov of the Soviet Union at the World Air Rifle Championships in Budapest. Suggs scored 693.80 out of a possible 700 points to pace the victorious U.S. team.

JACKSONVILLE
McClendon, a senior tailback at University Christian High, ran for 2,969 yards in 13 games this season to break the state single-season rushing record of 2,918 set in 1985 by Emmitt Smith, who's now the tailback at Florida.

LANGLEY, B.C.
Pells, a senior at Simon Fraser University, beat Michelle Marter-Rohl of Wisconsin-Parkside by 33 seconds to win the NAIA women's cross-country title, in Kenosha, Wis. She ran the 3.1 miles in a course-record 16:59.
