PRO BASKETBALL—Detroit won four in a row to slip past Atlanta and into first place in the Central Division. After easy wins over Sacramento, Golden State and New Jersey, the Pistons had to come from behind to beat Boston for the eighth straight time at the Silverdome. 106-101. In the Midwest Division, pacesetting Dallas tied a franchise record by winning its eighth game in a row. The Los Angeles Lakers and the Celtics continued to run away with the Pacific and the Atlantic division races, respectively. The Lakers won all three of their games, while the Celtics triumphed in three of four.
GOLF—CHIP BECK shot a final-round 68, for a 17-under-par total of 267. to beat Bill Sander and Mac O'Grady by four strokes and win $135.000 at the Los Angeles Open (page 84).
HOCKEY—In the Adams Division, Montreal won three straight to move past Boston into first place, one point ahead of the Bruins. Norris Division-leading Detroit lost all three of its games but still finished the week with a seven-point lead over St. Louis. In a Smythe Division showdown, Calgary scored two third-period goals to beat Edmonton 3-2 and increase its lead to three points. Philadelphia ran its Patrick Division lead to four points over the New York Islanders with a 2-0 week.
TENNIS—TIM MAYOTTE defeated John Fitzgerald 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 to earn the U.S. Pro Indoor title and $123,800. in Philadelphia.
TRACK & FIELD—CARLO THRANHARDT of West Germany high-jumped 7'11¼" to surpass by half an inch the world indoor record set in 1987 by Patrik Sj‚Äö√†√∂‚Äö√†√áberg of Sweden, in Berlin.
