Ian, a senior at Nazareth High, ran the 600 meters in 1:20.34 at the New York state high school indoor track championships in Ithaca. He broke by .16 of a second the national high school mark, set in 1985 by Paul Steele of Brooklyn.

TRENTON, MAINE
Charity, a Mount Desert Island High senior, won the state high school balance beam gymnastics title and finished second in the girls" Class B one-meter diving competition. She also captained the school's girls' soccer and tennis teams.
PAT MILLER
SALT LAKE CITY
Miller, 39, guided Utah's Nordic and Alpine skiers to the NCAA team championship; it was the Utes' sixth national crown in the last eight years. During his 12 seasons at Utah, Miller has coached a total of 68 All-Americas.
LORI OLSON
GIBBON, NEB.
Lori, a senior guard at Gibbon High, scored five points in the final six seconds as the 25-0 Lady Buffs beat Fremont Bergan 47-46 to win the C1 girls' title. She made a three-pointer, was fouled with a second left and hit both free throws.
BARBARA DUNBAR
LA JOLLA, CALIF.
Dunbar, 39, set two U.S. Masters age 35-39 records by swimming the 400-meter freestyle in 4:52.99 and the 400 individual medley in 5:40.56. She holds 12 other national age-group records, including three that are also world records.
ED JONES
KAKTOVIK, ALASKA
Ed, a junior guard on the Kaveolook School basketball team, led the Rams to the state final four by scoring a total of 1,037 points. An All-Alaska selection, Ed averaged 43.2 points, 16.1 rebounds, 8.8 assists and 7.4 steals over 24 games.
