Brett, a senior shortstop at Cordova High, had 68 hits to set the state record for the most in a single season. In 34 games Brett had a .557 batting average, including a 22-game hitting streak, scored 44 runs, had 40 RBIs and hit 10 home runs.

SHAUN STAFFORD
GAINESVILLE, FLA.
Stafford, a sophomore who plays No. 2 on the Florida women's tennis team, beat the Gators' No. 1 player, Halle Cioffi 7-6, 6-4 to win the NCAA singles championship. Stafford made All-America in both singles and doubles.

LaPHONSO ELLIS
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL.
LaPhonso, a 6'9" All-America senior center at Lincoln High, scored 26 points, made 15 rebounds and blocked a tournament-record nine shots in leading the Tigers past St. Francis De-Sales 60-52 for its second straight state AA title.

JANET HILL
SHREVEPORT, LA.
Janet, a Booker T. Washington High School senior, threw the discus 179'4¾" at a regional high school meet. Her throw was the second-best ever by an American high school girl and qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

LUCK, WIS.
Morris, 38, the boys' track and field coach at Unity High for the past nine years, led the Eagles to their 25th consecutive Upper St. Croix Valley Conference championship. The 25 titles constitute a national high school record.

PEARL MILLER
PALM SPRINGS, CALIF.
Miller, 90, a retired swim coach, set a national record in the 50-yard backstroke (1:42.97) at the U.S. Masters short course meet. She achieved the mark by becoming the first woman to compete in this event in the 90-and-over age group.
