Jones, 37, a piano technician, became the world's first female cyclist to break the 400-mile, 24-hour barrier in unpaced track competition, at Indianapolis. She rode 421.5 miles in the 24 hours and set a world mark for 100 km (3:04).

Baer, 64, a television writer and producer, extended his undefeated pitching streak to 34 games with an 8-4 win over the Giants, as his team, the Vikings, won the title in the Whittier-Narrows Modified Fast-Pitch Softball League.

Takeshia, 14, and Talita, 11, each set national age-group records in the standing long jump at the National Hershey's Track and Field Meet, in Hershey, Pa. Takeshia. a ninth-grader at Spring Lake Junior High jumped 8'11" to break her own girls' 13-14 age-group mark—set in 1988—by VS". She had established the standard for 11-and 12-year-old girls in 1987. Talita, a fifth-grader at Ferguson-Easley Elementary School, broke the girls' 10-11 age-group mark by VA" with a jump of 7'11¼".

John, 14, won the boys' 14-and-under age-group singles and doubles tennis titles at the River Bend club, in Great Falls. He also won the boys' 16-and-under singles and doubles events, sweeping two age-group tennis championships.
