I just finished reading your swimsuit issue (Down by the Seaside, Feb. 12), and as usual, I was impressed. The models, the swimsuits and the scenery were all spectacular. What was truly mesmerizing, though, was your gorgeous cover model, Judit Masco.

A sense of decency demands that I voice my indignation. I turn to SI each week because I am a sports buff, not because I wish to see sports figures in the buff. I refer, of course, to that photograph of a nearly naked Jim Palmer in an advertisement for men's underwear. This kind of near obscenity has no place in your magazine. The rest of your Feb. 12 issue, however, was very nice indeed.

It is obvious that SI will never stop publishing its best-selling issue. If you must become a fashion magazine once a year, could you put those bathing suits on athletes? In an age when physical educators are trying to encourage girls to participate in athletics, we must all work to end old stereotypes.

P.S. I'm 74.
I was disappointed by this year's issue. What once made the issue so special was extraordinary photography in fantastic locations. You showed the beauty of the places you visited as well as the models and their swimwear. In FROM THE PUBLISHER you say moving all that equipment among 10 islands was a logistical nightmare. Why bother? Of the 23 photographs, only four in any way utilized the setting, and two of those (the Fort Charlotte shot and the Pinese Island picture) are uninspired. The rest of the pictures could have been shot on any beach. Let's go back to the old days, when as much care was given to the selection of the setting as to the selection of the suits and models.
