Ray, 16, defeated 248 other riders at the American Horse Shows Association hunter seat equitation medal championships. In the finals he rode a new mount over a course that included a halt, a counter canter and a trot fence.

Janet, a senior at Tonganoxie High, won the state 4A girls' cross-country title when she ran two miles in 12:09.6 to beat Dawn Zimmerman of Lansing High by 6.6 seconds. Janet is the Chieftains' first female state champ in any sport.

DUMMERSTON, VT.
Drew, 13, won the overall ski-jumping title—in the process defeating the 14-15 and the 16-18 age-group champs—at an Eastern Junior Olympic qualifying tournament. He repeated that feat seven days later in another qualifier event.

Kris, a senior guard for Monaca High, had 88 points in the season's first two games, outscoring the opposing team each time. She pumped in 46 points in a 62-41 victory over Beaver High and had 42 in a 49-41 defeat of Riverside High.

Cuttino, 69, the owner of an insurance agency and an 11-handicap golfer, made his third hole-in-one in a year on the 156-yard 12th hole at Sumter's Sunset Country Club. He has had five aces since taking up the sport in 1946.

INDIANAPOLIS
Ervin, a 39-year-old customer-service representative, bowled games of 258,299 and 267 for a total of 824, to break the women's state record set in 1985 by Audrey Co-burn of Chesterton. Ervin had 29 strikes, including 18 in a row.
