IN HOCKEY, IT WAS A SEASON OF CERTAINTY AND SURPRISE. AS EXpected,
the Montreal Canadiens -- led by Jean Beliveau, Bernie Geoffrion,
Dickie Moore, Henri Richard and Jacques Plante -- won their fifth
straight Stanley Cup. Unexpectedly, the U.S. hockey team beat the
Canadians, the Soviets and the Czechs to win the Olympic gold medal
at Squaw Valley. At the Rome Games, sprinter Wilma Rudolph, who had
had polio as a child, won three golds, and the U.S. basketball team
sank the U.S.S.R. 81-57 in the final.
