A YEAR OF BEGINNINGS: FRESHMAN MICHAEL JORDAN PUT IN THE
game-winning jumper as North Carolina edged Georgetown 63-62 in the
NCAA final; 13-year-old Steffi Graf of West Germany played her first
pro match, a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Tracy Austin. Pro football had its
troubles: Former defensive tackle Don Reese admitted he had used
cocaine heavily and said the NFL was riddled with the drug; the
players went on strike for 57 days. Cal upset Stanford 25-20, despite
the heroic goal-line stand by the Stanford band.
