Michael, 14, beat Joshua Burris of Waynesville, N.C., to win the gold medal in the 13-14 age group at the U.S. Judo Association's national tournament. He has also won age-group state championships in Georgia and North Carolina.

GRACE KELLY
GLEN ELLYN, ILL.
Grace, 12, a goalkeeper for the Lakers in the 12-and-under division of the state women's soccer league, beat Libertyville 1-0 to get her eighth consecutive shutout. She also led the Lakers to an 11-3 season record and the division title.

QUINN ROWELL
RUSTON, L.A.
Quinn, 9, won the Class IV division (ages 7-9) state gymnastics all-around title in only his second year of competition. He won individual titles in the floor exercise (9.6) and the horizontal bar (9.5) and finished with a 54.70 total score.

MARLENE POOLE
GREENSBORO, N.C.
Marlene, a recent graduate of Dudley High, won the girls' 100- and 200-meter runs in the North Carolina track and field championships for the fourth consecutive year. Over that span, she also led her teams to four state girls' titles.

NILES, MICH.

Padgett, 75, an exterior and interior decorator, and Farrell, 77, a retired tool and die maker, defeated 863 bowlers of all ages to win the state Moose doubles bowling tournament at Airway Lanes in Kalamazoo. In his three-game series, Padgett, who has a 167 average, had only one open frame in rolling a 678 that included a high game of 257. Farrell, who has a 168 average, rolled a 577 series with just two open frames. The pair finished with a 1,456 total, including handicap, to win the tournament by 44 pins.
