In the movie, which features cameos by, among others, Evander Holyfield, Herschel Walker, Jerry Rice and Jim Kelly, Ireland plays a soccer midfielder turned ace kicker for the Texas State University football team. "She's really learned to kick," says producer Mace Neufeld, "which is a good thing. Her double is a man about her size, but he doesn't quite have her shape."

By the Atlanta Falcons in the 10th round of the NFL draft, wide receiver Walter Sutton, a convicted crack dealer from Southwest State in Marshall, Minn., who will begin a nine-year prison term in January. Last Thursday, Sutton, who is being allowed to finish school before starting his term, was told by District Judge Elizabeth Kovachevich that he would be ill-advised to seek employment, given his impending prison sentence. "Obviously, the information provided to us before the draft was inaccurate and misleading," said Falcon vice-president Ken Herock, who claimed the Falcons believed that Sutton would not have to serve any time.

By the Florida High School Activity Association, Chris Almond, who after shooting a two-over-par 74 at Magnolia Point Golf and Country Club in Green Cove Springs, Fla., to finish first in the District IV golf tournament, was disqualified from participating in the subsequent state tournament for taking a sip of his father's beer. Almond, who has a 3.8 grade point average at Gainesville High, claims that he doesn't even like beer and that he only took a swallow because his mouth was dry after he finished play on the 6½-mile course.

Hall of Fame thoroughbred horse trainer Laz Barrera, 66; of heart failure; in Downey, Calif. Barrera won the Eclipse Award as the top U.S. trainer four times and in 1978 had a Triple Crown winner in Affirmed, whom Barrera, a longtime Yankee fan, likened to Joe DiMaggio. But the Cuban-born Barrera claimed his favorite racing moment occurred on his birthday 15 years ago, when the Barrera-trained Bold Forbes upset heavy favorite Honest Pleasure in the Kentucky Derby on the same afternoon that two of his other horses won the Illinois Derby and the Carter Handicap.
