Hamel, 29, a film editor, won the U.S. Powerlifting Federation's state title in the 148.75-pound class for the seventh consecutive year. He had a total of 1,400 pounds in the bench press, deadlift and squat.
Helen Stephens
ST. LOUIS
Stephens, 73, gold medalist in the women's 100 meters and 400-meter relay at the 1936 Olympics, won all four events she entered at the St. Louis Senior Olympics: discus, shot put, javelin and standing jump.
Drew Romeo
FORT COLLINS, COLO.
Romeo, 21, a senior at Colorado State, helped the Rams to their second consecutive national collegiate polo championship by scoring six goals in a 17-14 defeat of the University of California, Davis.
Amanda Tamburini
BETHLEHEM, PA.
Amanda, 7, has won 22 trophies in 40 quarter-midget race car events for drivers aged five to nine. Of approximately 28 junior stock racers in her Quarter Midgets of America region, she is one of only three girls.
Adam McNeill
DURHAM, N.H.
Adam, 15, won the junior boys' division (17 and under) in the single scull competition at the Scholastic National Crew Championships. A rower for just one year, Adam beat five others over the 1,500-meter course.
Quantricia Thomas
OCALA, FLA.
Quantricia, a junior third baseman for the North Marion High softball team, finished the season with a team-high .736 batting average. Her totals included 47 runs batted in and 23 extra-base hits, 13 of them triples.
