Brandan, 14, won the gold medal in the 99-pound division at the international Göteborg judo tournament in Sweden. He won all four of his matches by ippon (a technical throw, choke, hold-down or arm bar).
Celeta Carter
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Carter, who recently completed her senior year at Milton Hershey High, led the Spartans to their third straight state girls' track team title by winning the 100-meter hurdles, the 200 dash, and running on two victorious relay teams.
Mike Halperin
NAPLES, FLA.
Halperin, a recent graduate of Barron Collier High and a lefthanded pitcher, had a state record-setting season: 72/ consecutive scoreless innings, only 7/ innings shy of the national high school mark.
Phillis Woods
TULSA
Woods, 52, a sophomore-to-be at Missouri Southern, was second in singles (fifth position) at the state intercollegiate women's tennis championships and third in doubles (number three position).
Vincent Pestilli
BROWNFIELD, MAINE
Pestilli, 23, finished first in the master-expert class at the International Air Rifle Championships, scoring 569 points out of a possible 600. He has also been a member of the U.S. shooting team for four years.
Katie Beeler
GRANGER, IND.
Katie, 11, won five golds in the 10-and-under girls' division of the state Junior Olympic swimming championships. She was tops in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100 free, the 200 free, the 50 butterfly and the 200 IM.
