She finally supplied the definitive response with a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Jana Novotna, staving oil two match points to win her 12th Chicago title. "I love coming here," she said.

His intention to retire at the end of the season. Ron Fraser. who built the baseball program at the University of Miami into one of the best in the nation. The top-ranked Hurricanes. 6-0 at week's end. have been invited to the NCAA tournament a record 19 consecutive years, reaching the College World Series 11 times and winning the national championship in 1982 and '85. Fraser's 30-year record is 1,222-428, making him the winningest active college baseball coach. Fraser, 55, will coach Team USA at the Barcelona Olympics, at which baseball will be a medal sport for the first time.

By Oakland Athletics slugger Jose Canseco, his estranged wife's BMW, when he rammed it twice with his Porsche during a 4:30 a.m. chase. Alter a spat at a Miami gas station. Canseco allegedly forced Esther Canseco off the road, causing $10,000 in damage to her $78,000 car. To punctuate his displeasure, Canseco spit on her window. Canseco was charged with aggravated battery and released on $5,000 bond.

Outspoken Colorado football coach Bill McCartney, after he called a press conference to explain why he joined the advisory board of an organization dedicated to banning gay rights laws. "Homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God," McCartney said. University president Judith Albino reprimanded McCartney, warning him not to use his position to advocate his personal views. About 100 people gathered outside the Buffaloes' athletic offices on Wednesday to protest McCartney's intolerance. "He is trying to create an atmosphere of fear and hate on this campus." said senior Samantha Levine, president of the student legislative council.

By troubled Yankee reliever Steve Howe, a Newsday reporter who was in Kalispell, Mont., working on a story that appeared last week in the New York daily. "This is a small town and I know everybody" Howe told Tim Layden. "Step lightly, or you just might have trouble getting out of here. That's not a threat, that's a promise." Howe goes to trial on March 30 on drug charges.

City officials in Alameda. Calif., upon discovering that Golden State Warrior coach Don Nelson was keeping a pet pig in his backyard, in violation of a local ordinance. Nelson received a summons ordering him to dispose of the potbellied porker, which he had purchased on Jan. 31 from a breeder for $500. Last week Nelson reluctantly complied, returning Miss Piggy for a refund. "It's a sad day in the Nelson household." he said. "It was a really neat pig."
