Maynetto, 36, won the USTA National Men's 30 Indoor Championships, a seniors tournament, by beating top-seeded David Mathews 6-3, 6-4 in the semis and second-seeded Tom Mastromarino 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 in the finals.
Mike Smith
PIQUA, OHIO
Smith, a senior shortstop for Indiana, won the Big Ten triple crown by leading the conference with a .472 batting average, 14 home runs and 36 RBIs. His .490 overall average broke a 47-year-old school record.
Marci Whitehead
DAMASCUS, MD.
Marci, a senior Softball pitcher for Damascus High, was 19-0 with a 0.00 ERA while pitching every inning for the state 2A champion Hornets. She also set a national high school single-season mark of six perfect games.
Elisabeth Shell
HOUSTON
Lis, a sophomore at Tomball High, won Class 4A state girls' titles in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, with clockings of 5:04.5 and 11:05.4, respectively. Last fall she won the state girls' cross-country championship.
Darren Lowe
WILLISTON PARK, N.Y.
Lowe, a senior lacrosse attackman at Brown, was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and set a school single-season scoring record with 102 points. He also set Ivy career marks for points (108) and assists (64).
John Joseph
REDONDO BEACH, CALIF.
Joseph, 71, retired as Santa Monica Community College's swimming coach with a 42-year record of 453-125-2. He produced 308 junior college All-Americas and guided the Corsairs to 13 undefeated seasons.
