Kim Diehlmann
COPIAGUE, N.Y.
Diehlmann, a senior volleyballer at the University of Hartford, got 22 digs in a 3-15, 7-15, 15-7, 15-4, 15-8 win over Vermont to set an NCAA all-division women's record of 2,630 for her career. Last spring, while playing second base for the Hawks' softball team, she led the nation with an average of .21 home runs per game.
Mike Melvin
CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Mike, a senior striker on the Charlotte Catholic High soccer team, became the leading scorer in North Carolina high school history when his eight goals in a 10-1 victory over Monroe High ran his career total to 137. He had led the Cougars to a 19-0 record through last Friday and the No. 1 ranking in the state.
Marion Maney-McInerney
DEDHAM, MASS.
Maney-McInerney, 30, a driving-range owner, won the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Golf Championship over Carol Semple Thompson, 44, of Sewickly, Pa., the 1990 titlist. McInerney won the crown on the first playoff hole by sinking a three-foot par putt. Neither golfer was ahead by more than one hole during the match-play round.
Angela Nelson
SALT LAKE CITY
Angela, a senior at Highland High, won the girls' state singles tennis crown for the third year in a row, by beating Molly Sanderson of Salt Lake City East High 6-2, 6-2. Highland High, winner of four straight girls' state team titles, also had the No. 2 and No. 3 singles champs, Rebecca Foulger and Sarah Mecham.
Tyrone Roseberry
STEUBENVILLE, OHIO
Tyrone, a senior tailback at Steubenville High, carried the ball 23 times for 305 yards, including touchdown runs of 75, 56, four and 32 yards, in a 50-40 win over Weir High of Weirton, W.Va. As of last Friday he had rushed for 1,112 yards on 128 attempts, an 8.7-yard average, and 14 touchdowns for the 6-2 Big Red.
Cathy O'Neill
RICHARDSON, TEXAS
Cathy, 15, won three events and set two girls' junior national records to lead her team, City of Piano, to both the girls' and overall titles at the Junior National West swim meet. Her marks came in the 200-meter breaststroke, in which she had a time of 2:35.54, and the 400 individual medley (4:54.40). She also won the 200 IM (2:21.73).
