After Malvern (Pa.) Prep's hockey team received 15 penalties in
its season opener, its coach said, ''The kids know I hate
penalties.'' Well, maybe not. The coach is former Philadelphia Flyer
bad boy Dave Schultz, now 43, who 1) still holds the NHL
single-season record of 472 penalty minutes and 2) rode the officials
so mercilessly in a game last week that he was assessed two bench
minors, a game misconduct and, finally, a gross misconduct that
carried with it a 30-day suspension.
