Some Advantage

A compromise of sorts was reached last week in a dispute between
Bob Keino (left), a 17-year-old junior at Ridgewood (N.J.) High and a
son of Kenyan Olympic hero Kip Keino, and the New Jersey State
Interscholastic Association. Bob, who says he came to high school in
the U.S. in quest of stronger academics, won the state cross-country
championship last fall but was stripped of that victory and declared
ineligible for future competition. Facing a legal challenge, the
association restored Bob's eligibility but not his title, holding
that he had ''transferred for athletic advantage.'' Of course, in
Kenya, Bob could have attended St. Patrick's, a school 14 miles from
his home. St. Patrick's has produced 15 Olympic runners, Ridgewood
none.
