Tasker, 73, coached Hobbs High to an 87-77 overtime victory against Alamagordo High to become the alltime winningest high school basketball coach, with 1,027 victories. The Eagles have not had a losing season under Tasker since 1951-52, and in '69-70 they averaged 114.6 points per game, still a national record.

Nancy Fiddler
CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF.
Fiddler, 37, the oldest member of the U.S. women's cross-country ski team, won the 5K classic-style race at the national championships in Rumford, Maine, to earn her 14th national title, one shy of the record. She has won six 5K crowns, four 10K championships and two titles each in the 15K and the 30K.

GLEN GARDNER, N.J.
Brendan, 16, used a strong uphill surge to win the 5,000-meter Kinney National Cross-Country Championship in San Diego in 15:13. He finished 10th last year. A two-time Eastern States cross-country champion and All-America, he won the 1991 New Jersey high school cross-country championship as a junior.

Javonne Brooks
WHARTON, TEXAS
Brooks, a senior outside hitter for the New Orleans women's volleyball team, got 20 kills in a 15-4, 15-7, 15-4 win over Texas-Pan American to break the women's NCAA career record of 2,767. She finished the season for the Lady Techsters with 2,932 kills and set another women's mark: 65 matches with 20 or more kills.

Mike, 18, and his younger sister, Chris, 17, dominated the U.S. National Long-Course Junior Speed Skating Championships. Mike placed first in the boys' 1,500-meter race and second in the 5,000. Chris swept the four girls' events, winning the 500, the 1,000, the 1,500 and the 3,000. At the Junior World Cycling championships held in September in Athens, Mike was the most successful U.S. male in the 1,000-meter sprint, placing sixth, while Chris was the only U.S. female to win a medal, earning a bronze in the matched sprints. Three months before that, at the U.S. Junior National Cycling Championships, both Mike and Chris had won the matched sprints, with Mike winning the 1,000 as well.
