Shameika, 13, and Melissa, 12, each broke two national records at the 1993 AAU Indoor Track & Field Championships in Lawrence, Kans. Shameika broke her own record in the 60-yard dash by running a 7.46 and also established a mark in the 300 (37.94) in the youth (14-and-under) girls' division. Her time in the latter race was 1.2 seconds faster than the previous record. Melissa also competed in the youth girls' division and finished first in the one-and two-mile races with record times of 5:29.92 and 11:48.67, respectively. Her one-mile clocking was more than seven seconds faster than the old mark. In the two-mile race she shaved an astounding 26.7 seconds off the record.
Stormi Leonardo
MERCED, CALIF.
Stormi, a freshman goalie on the Merced High girls' soccer team, had 16 shutouts in leading the Bears to an 18-7-5 record. She began the season with six consecutive shutouts but was then scored upon twice by her own teammates in a 2-0 loss to Clovis High. She ended the recently completed season with a 0.56 goals-against average.
Ray Funkhouser
TOM'S RIVER, N.J.
Funkhouser, 41, set a world masters race-walking record by covering a 5K course in Sea Bright, N.J., in 20:35. Funkhouser, who finished fourth in the 20K race walk at last summer's U.S. Olympic Trials, surpassed the old 5K road record, set in 1992 by Robert Keating of Nashua. N.H., by nearly two minutes.
Jeff McGinness
IOWA CITY, IOWA
Jeff, a senior wrestler at City High, pinned Rod Ergenbright of Newton High in the 130-pound division at the state final to complete an undefeated four-year varsity career. The victory, Jeff's 172nd for the Little I lawks, gave him his fourth state title. He had previously won championships in the 103-, 112 -and 125-pound classes.
Demetri Beekman
MILWAUKEE
Beekman, a senior basketball guard at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., scored 24 points and had 20 assists in a 119-110 loss to Bryant College to become only the second player in NCAA history to get both 1,000 career points and assists. Chris Corchiani of North Carolina State was the first to perform the feat, in 1991.
