Jennie and Dominique, both 11, placed first and second, respectively, in the girls' youth (11-and-under) all-around gymnastics competition at the Junior Pan American Championships in Sao Paulo. Brazil. Jennie's score of 37.525 points for the four events (vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise) edged that of Dominique, who had 36.725. In the individual competitions, Dominique won the bars, vault and floor, while Jennie placed first on the beam and second on the uneven bars. Jennie and Dominique's efforts helped the U.S. get a gold medal in the girls' youth team competition. Last year, at age 10, Jennie and Dominique were the youngest gymnasts ever to be named to the U.S. Junior National Team.
Laura Caldwell
LAKE OSWEGO, ORE.
Caldwell, 40, ran a 5K course in Sandy, Ore., in 19:19 to win the women's 40-44 age group at the National Masters 5K Cross-Country Championships. A former school record holder in the 800 (2:11.6) at Florida State, she has been the top finisher in her age group in eight of nine distance races since turning 40 last October.
Bud McKeon
FAIRFIELD, CONN.
McKeon, 52 and an attorney, coached the Fairfield Prep boys' ski team to their fifth state championship in a row. The Jesuits' top six giant slalom runs on a Mount Southington course were, in total, 1.43 seconds faster than those of second-place Ridgefield High. In five seasons as coach, McKeon has guided Fairfield to a 106-0 record.
Darnell Robinson
OAKLAND
Robinson, a 6'11" senior basketball center at Emery High, broke the state career high school scoring record of 3,053 points set by Tracy Murray, now of the Portland Trail Blazers, when he had 31 in a 112-50 win over Marin High. He finished his four varsity seasons with 3,361 points and led the Spartans to the state Division V title.
Tom Philion
MINOT, N. Dak.
Tom, a senior center for Minot High, was named North Dakota's Mr. Hockey after scoring 30 goals and getting 29 assists while leading the Magicians to a 19-6 record. Last year he was named MVP of the state tournament for scoring 15 points in three games as he led Minot to the championship.
