Ron Mason
HASLETT, MICH.
Mason, 53, coached the Michigan State hockey team to a 6-5 win over Kent State for his 674th career win, a national collegiate hockey record. In 27 seasons at three schools—Lake Superior State and Bowling Green were the others—he has a record of 675-293-45. In 1986 he coached the Spartans to a national title.
Karleen Shields
VALLEJO, CALIF.
Bridgete Williams
INGLEWOOD, CALIF.
Shields, a 5'7" sophomore guard at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, and Williams, a 5'6" sophomore guard at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington, were the most prolific scorers in college basketball this season. Shields, who is 24, poured in 42.2 points per game for the Lady Comets, the highest scoring average in junior college history. In a 91-85 overtime win against Sierra College, she had 59 points and converted two three-pointers in the final 6.9 seconds of regulation to tie the game. She also had 19.5 rebounds per game. Williams, 19, averaged 38.7 points and 6.5 steals in leading the Lady Seahawks to a 28-4 record. She scored 72 points in a 127-52 defeat of Long Beach City College and had two 65-point games.
Ben Ingrum
HOLLISTER, MO.
Ben, a senior, was the only member of the Hollister High swim team. He qualified for the state meet in four events but was obliged to comply with a rule that limits an individual to two events. He won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.46 and finished second in the 100 backstroke in 54.30. In the field of 53 teams he ended up in 14th place.
Jan Whittaker
BOUNTIFUL, UTAH
Whittaker, 33, the coach of the Bountiful High drill team, became the first woman ever to be named Utah's high school coach of the year, after guiding the Mandonelles to a seventh consecutive state title. Her squads have also earned 14 first-place finishes in four categories during the last five national team championship competitions.
Rob Pendergist
ELLSWORTH, MAINE
Pendergist, a senior at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md., became the first four-time IC4A indoor pentathlon champion. He won the 55-meter hurdles, the long jump, the shot put and the high jump and placed second in the 1,000. His 4,293 points was an IC4A meet record as well as an Eastern Collegiate mark.
