Patsy Odden
WATERTOWN, CONN.
Odden, 51, the girls' ice hockey coach at The Taft School, guided the Big Red to the New England prep school girls' title for the third straight year and to an undefeated (21-0) record for the second season in a row with a 4-0 defeat of Tabor Academy. Her mark in 18 years of coaching at Taft is 252-56-5.
Richard Gates
SHAKER HEIGHTS, OHIO
Richard, a senior righthander at Shaker Heights High, pitched a no-hitter, striking out 20 of the 28 batters he faced, during the Red Raiders' 12-3 season-opening victory over Kenston High in a seven-inning game. He followed that with a 12-strikeout, six-hit performance in a 9-3 seven-inning defeat of Parma High.
Denise Reeves
PHILADELPHIA
Denise, a senior on the Washington High girls' gymnastics team, led the Eagles to the city Public League girls' title by repeating as the all-around champion. Washington High, which earned 27 of the 45 possible top three individual placements at the meet, was also a repeater: It has been city team champ for 16 consecutive years.
Brian Wilkinson
MERCED, CALIF.
Brian, a senior at Merced High, became the first runner to win both the national scholastic outdoor and indoor miles in the same academic year. He won the outdoor race in December with a time of 4:16.58 and recently ran a 4:16.06 indoors. His 800-meter time of 1:49.50 at the Fresno Relays is the best among U.S. high schoolers this spring.
Tracy Sadler
HARTWELL, GA.
Tracy, a forward and the lone senior on the Hart County High girls' basketball team, scored 26 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 77-63 defeat of Thomasville High in the Class AAA state final. It was Hart County's fifth state title in as many years, and Tracy was named tournament MVP for the fourth straight time.
Tom Adams
ST. PAUL
Tom, 13, became the first Scrabble player to go undefeated at the prestigious Smoky Mountain Tournament in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Playing exclusively against adults, he won 18 games, averaging 410 points per match. Tom, who is in the seventh grade, cleared his rack with airpost, an 80-point word score, to win one match.
