A Zinger
Wielding an Imaginary Wedge (left), Paul Azinger readied himself for his third shot on the final hole of the Memorial Tournament at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, where he trailed his good friend Payne Stewart by a stroke. Moments later, from a bad lie in a greenside bunker, he swung the real thing. Azinger said later, "When I hit the ball into the bunker, I just said, 'I'll go ahead and make that.' But you always say that. I didn't take it to heart." But he took it to the cup, blasting a miraculous shot that just cleared the bunker's edge, landed 10 feet from the pin and curled into the hole. A stunned Stewart missed an eight-foot putt that would have forced a playoff, then yanked a two-footer to fall to third. Azinger's shot got him a check for $252,000. Stewart's misses? They cost him $156,000.
