Through Monday the staggering Mets had gone more than eight weeks without winning two consecutive games—a string of 51 games that began on April 18 when they lost to the Reds after beating them in the two preceding games. During their run of ineptitude, the Mets were party to two other dubious streaks: New York righthander Anthony Young extended his personal streak of pitching losses, dating back to last season, to 21; and Phillie lefthander Danny Jackson ended his major league-record run of 82 straight starts without a complete game when he pitched a 3-0 shutout against New York last Saturday.
Only 11 other teams in this century have gone as many as 51 consecutive games in a single season without winning two in a row.
